Cooperation with The Childhood Burn Foundation, ROC
In view of the starting of Health Insurance in 1995, the Childhood Burn Foundation of the Republic of China noticed that because of the limitation of investment for the burn care, there would be adverse effect for the quality of burn care owing to its high development cost. Therefore , the foundation was looking for a way to establish a demonstration burn ward in southern Taiwan. After prudent evaluation ,it decided that the Burn Center of Zuoying Armed Forces General Hospital would be the best choice due to the fact that they took in most burn patients. If its facilities could be upgraded and personnel fully staffed, then more burn patients could benefit from improved quality care .Besides, the hospital had always aimed at the burn case as a major of development. In addition, they showed much enthusiasm for cooperation. Starting in October 1994, both sides began to study methods for working together. Later, the final plan was settled and approved by the foundation and the Navy/Defense Department. On March 4, 1995,the cooperative contract was signed, opening a new page of burn-care history.
The plans
The first phase of the cooperation plan was to add more software and hardware to the burn center, along with two burn-care nurses, a social worker, and an administrative assistant. The center was renovated, children beds were bought, operating room and some equipments in ward were also added. All these were completed in October, 1995.
The second phase was to establish the model burn ward which became the first ward in southern Taiwan dedicated to burn patients. It offered professional care to minor burn patients and recovering patients of major burn. The ward was opened in october 1996, and is still in operation today.
The third phase started from march, 1998 when the post-burned reconstructive ward was established. At the same time. the occupational therapy room was built with a number of rehabilitation equipments. Also added was the dedicated therapist, making the rehabilitation an important function within the entire burn- care team.
The prospect
For more than ten years, both sides have been continuously offering the best therapy, and resources available for the burn patients in southern Taiwan. For the future, w’ll make an effort in making more preventive propaganda of burn , then they will get better care , therapy and go back to their schools, work places and home.
